Proposal: Adding a Hands-On, Project-Based Course to the Mechanical Engineering Program
The Purpose
This proposal recommends adding a project-based course to the mechanical engineering program. The class would focus on giving students hands-on experience by letting them solve real-world engineering problems. This course would help bridge the gap between theory and actual practice, better-preparing students for internships and careers in the field.
The Problem
Many mechanical engineering classes focus heavily on theory, equations, and textbook work. While this is important, students don’t always get to apply what they’ve learned in a realistic setting. This can make it hard to stay engaged and doesn’t always prepare students for the hands-on skills needed in the workforce. Some students may even graduate feeling unsure about how to use their knowledge in real-life engineering situations.
Proposed Solution or Plan
I propose introducing a hands-on course where students work in teams to complete real engineering projects. These projects could include designing a simple machine, testing materials, or building a working prototype. The course would consist of all engineering phases—research, design, testing, and presenting results. Local businesses or organizations could be involved by suggesting project ideas or visiting the class to give feedback. This class would ideally be offered to second or third-year students with a basic background in engineering.
Conclusion
This new course would help mechanical engineering students gain the necessary experience to succeed in their careers. It would make learning more engaging and allow students to build confidence through hands-on practice. Connecting classroom learning to real-world problem-solving would make this course a valuable addition to the program and help students feel more ready for the challenges they’ll face after graduation.

CNC Laser Project Final Assembly Report
Summary
1. All parts apart from those of the lid fit together as intended.
2. Glue is required to bond components of the lid permanently. Glue is not necessary for the assembly of the dice box body.
3. Out-of-spec dimensions did not affect the final assembly function.
4. See the following First Article Inspection Reports and Inspection Drawings for additional details.
